Twenty years ago Hackbridge went from being a relatively unknown Edwardian suburb in Sutton to a hot spot for sustainable living. The arrival of BedZED (Beddington Zero Energy Development), a new community complete with homes, public facilities, and even a college, transformed the area. This pioneering project inspired others, ultimately turning the destination into the first eco suburb with sustainability at its heart.
BedZED was completed in 2012 and earned a place on the shortlist for the Stirling Prize. The designs were praised because they included huge reductions in green house gas emissions, water use, and waste. Sustainability was built in thanks to quality insulation and a gas communal boiler for the community.
Although BedZED was finished 15 years ago it has continued to inspire other projects. The largest and most recent of these is New Mill Quarter. The 750 home development is also focused on sustainability. Again there is a district heating system in place to heat homes efficiently. On top of this there are living walls on properties. These will increase biodiversity, absorb rain water, and regulate air temperatures.
Hackbridge has really benefitted from the eco suburb moniker, becoming a popular area for investment. Residents can enjoy several great open spaces in the area, including Beddlington Park, the Wandle Trail along the river, and the Wrythe Recreational Ground. The community feel is fantastic, particularly for families. The location under half an hour from Victoria in Central London is ideal for commuters too.
