Towards the end of January a government inspector granted approval for the new Local Plan by Redbridge Council. It has taken 11 months to work on the document, setting out exactly what the local authority plans to do in the area between now and 2030. A variety of topics are covered including the aim to build new houses, create shops and leisure facilities, and improve the infrastructure.
The Local Plan is not finalised though. The approval is conditional and comes with 77 suggested modifications. A final version is expected in the middle of March.
One of the headline figures from the plan is the housing target. Redbridge Council aims to build a minimum of 16,845 homes in the Borough in the period. This would exceed the current target set by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan but would by slightly less than what it is expected the Borough needs. Fortunately the number is not finalised either so it could change.
Another important thing included in the inspector’s report is recommendations to protect open green spaces. It is recommended that playing fields at Ford and Oakfields be saved from development. This follows a move last year to also protect sports pitches in Barkingside.
Five investment growth areas are expected to be created in Redbridge in the near future. These will result in measures to boost homes, jobs, and floor space for businesses. Ilford town centre will be one of these. The plan is to create a cultural quarter and health hub in the area.
