Successful Safer School Streets in Wandsworth

There are many fantastic locations in London for families. Wandsworth has become one of the most popular for a number of reasons. For example, it has plenty of green space, some fantastic schools, and excellent amenities. The success of a scheme from the council is making it even better too. We want to have a closer look at this here. Then, if you need a lettings agent in Wandsworth, you can trust us.

Safer School Streets

Lettings agent WandsworthIn 2020 Wandsworth Council did a trial of safer streets around five primary schools in the borough. The plan was to close the streets temporarily in the morning and at the end of the school day. It would make it safer for children, reduce congestion, improve air quality, and create a much better environment around schools.

The first phase of the plan was very successful. All five of the trials became permanent after a review. Because of the success, 4 more phases have followed. As a result, more than 50% of the streets around primary schools are now participating. In total that is 29 schools.

Some schools have chosen not to take part in the scheme though. Broadwater Primary School was part of Phase 2 but was suspended following their trial. Schemes at two more schools, Oasis Academy and Hornsby House, are also currently suspended. Proposals for two more, Swaffield Primary and St Joseph’s, won’t be progressing at the moment.

The Council is happy to exceed the 50% benchmark. They say the impact is easy to see, with safer routes, cleaner air, and less congestion. Closing the streets is also encouraging more active travel, including walking and cycling.

Pupils and teachers are happy too. They particularly love that it feels safe to go to school and leave at the end of the day. It also makes it quieter with fewer cars on the roads.

Exemptions

An interesting thing to note here is the Council made steps to ensure the schemes would be fair. While the streets are closed to most traffic at the start and end of a school day, people who need to drive in the areas can apply for exemptions. Residents, local businesses, and anyone with a Blue Badge can get an exemption. This is only necessary in some areas that have ANPR cameras.
