Enfield is home to a number of attractive suburban towns surrounded by countryside. Southgate is a particularly popular one because it offers the advantage of being on the Piccadilly Line. This means that commuters in the area can reach King’s Cross in less than half an hour.
The settlement is said to date back to the 12th century. It sprang up because it was situated at the southern entrance to Enfield Chase, a royal hunting ground. The area formerly had thick woodland and was home to numerous deer. Queen Elizabeth I is said to have hunted there in the 16th century when she was still a Princess.
The arrival of the Piccadilly Line in 1933 triggered the development of Southgate. Homes and new commercial premises were built, creating a thriving suburb. The town centre remains full of wonderful amenities to this day, including highly regarded restaurants, bars and traditional pubs, and shops.
Although the development transformed the area, it remains spacious and green. There are plenty of beautiful wide tree lined streets and there is countryside all around the town. Not surprisingly the area is popular with families and people who love the outdoors.
The majority of the housing stock in Southgate is 1930s. Many of these homes were built following the arrival of the railway, replacing older estate homes. There is an impressive mix of properties, from large mansions and manors to semi detached properties and modest terraces. The Green is home to some fine Georgian homes as well as picturesque cottages. Modern housing estates also sprang up in the area, expanding the mix of properties even further.
There are good amenities and schools in the area too. In terms of schooling there are a number of highly regarded primaries to choose from. There is a local academy for 11 upwards and nearby Cockfosters is home to another secondary school.
