Supermarket giant Tesco is forming a partnership with property developer Weston Homes. The two parties intend to provide as many as 1,400 new homes in North East London as well as lots of other new amenities. They’ve both been in talks for some time over a project. This would redevelop the Tesco store at 822 High Road in Goodmayes, Redbridge. The plan is to turn everything, including the car park, into a mixed-use scheme.
What can we expect from the development?
There are many components that form the Tesco and Weston Homes scheme. This includes a brand new Tesco store, a three-form primary school, and also new housing. Of the suggested 1,400 residential units, 35% are to be affordable housing. These plans will include other additions as well. Expect to see employment spaces like cafes and workshops. An upgrade for the public realm complete with new landscaping is also part of the plan.
Tesco wants to preserve its continuity of trading if the site’s redevelopment proceeds as planned. The aim is for the new store to go in the current car park. While it is being built the current one shall remain open. Then, when the new store opens the current one will close and face demolition.
With a development pipeline of 6,000 homes, it’s easy to understand why Tesco is working with Weston Homes.
