Barnet Council has been working on a new Local Plan for almost nine years. It is getting incredibly close to becoming a reality. The last hurdle is in sight now after Cabinet councillors gave their approval. All that remains is for the full council to vote. If it gets a green light, it will have a big impact on the area. Conservative Councillors have a big concern about plans for Edgware town centre. As a result, their deputy leader, Lucy Wakeley, said the Cabinet should “urgently review” the supplementary planning document (SPD) for the area.
The biggest concern is the height limits on new tower blocks in Edgware. The area has been identified as being suitable for growth and regeneration for years. Most importantly, high rises will be acceptable. There are plans for 25 towers, the highest up to 9 storeys. However, residents and opposition councillors have been calling for amendments to reduce the heights.
Another concern is the proposal for a new electric bus station in Edgware. Notably, the London Fire Brigade are worried.
Councillor Ross Houston, Cabinet Member for Homes and Regeneration, had a response to the major concerns. He said amendments to the plans are “not feasible” at this late stage. However, he also said he would have “no problem” passing on concerns, especially about the bus station.
