An interesting piece of history

While the park itself gets the plaudits for the award win, the ruins of Lesnes Abbey are also noteworthy. They have an impressive history. The original abbey dates back to 1178. There is a belief it may have links to the conflict between Henry II and Thomas Becket, founded by Richard de Luci as penance for the murder of the latter.

The abbey did not manage to become a large community. It also had financial issues because of work to drain the marshland and maintain the river embankments. As a result, it was closed in 1525 when a wave of monasteries with few residents shut their doors. The area became farmland after demolition of most of the buildings. Interestingly, there was excavation of the ruins in 1909/10.

Since 1931, it has been a public park. You can visit today to see the entire outline of the abbey. Some of the original walls have been restored in places too. The ruins have a Grade II listing and classification as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
