At the end of October Hounslow Council was proud to reveal they had given permission for the creation of new housing for some of the most vulnerable members of society. People leaving care

A care leaver is anyone who has been a ward of the state but is about to turn 18 and become an adult. This can include people who have been in foster or residential care.

Care leavers are some of the most vulnerable people because the support they had as children comes to an end. They then have the task of finding housing and making their own way as adults. It can be incredibly difficult, and there is a huge risk of homelessness. A major issue is they may end up in a placement that no longer meets their personal needs. The Council’s plan

Hounslow Council is aware of their responsibility to care leavers and the role they can play in supporting them. With that in mind, they have set aside £6.15m to help develop housing specifically for them. This could lead to some of the most impressive examples of property investment in Hounslow.

As part of the plan, the local authority has done a review of their property portfolio. They have chosen five viable small sites in the borough that they can develop to create housing. These homes will be safe, secure, and affordable, giving young care leavers the first step they need.

Councillor Tom Bruce had some words about the project. He said the Council is committed to protecting care leavers, respecting the responsibility they have in helping the transition into independent adulthood. Central to this is providing suitable, safe accommodation. They know that a secure home helps people to succeed in key areas of life such as education, employment, and relationships.

The developments will be identified to provide greater affordable housing for residents. In a broader sense they will ensure areas are safer, greener, and healthier so they support the whole community.
