Name chosen for new Agar Grove housing block

There was exciting news about the redevelopment of the Agar Grove estate earlier this month. A name for a new housing block with 94 affordable council homes was chosen by residents. We want to have a closer look here, and a look back at the other new properties on the estate. Then, if you want some help with investing and property management in Camden, you can rely on us.

Oliver Heaviside House

Property management CamdenThe newest block, planned to complete late in 2027, will commemorate Camden’s most famous scientist. Oliver Heaviside was born in poverty in Camden Town in 1850. A bout with scarlet fever as a child left him with hearing impairment. This, and having no formal education after 17, did not stop him. He went on to develop techniques for solving mathematical equations, particularly shaping the understanding and application of Maxwell’s equations. His work had a huge impact on electromagnetism, communications, and many other things we rely on today.

Camden residents chose to name the new building Oliver Heaviside House to recognise his incredible story. It celebrates his achievements and how he overcame barriers in his way to make a lasting impact.

The Council is excited for these new homes to be finished and ready for residents to move in. The high quality design will ensure people have great homes. They will also be affordable. Most importantly, they will benefit locals. Homes will go to residents in Lulworth Tower, a 1960s block that is suffering from overcrowding, and former residents of Agar Grove that had to temporarily move away.

The broader redevelopment

As a top provider of property management in Camden, we know how tricky it can become to manage housing estates. Councils have a lot on their plate, so they can struggle with older buildings and issues like anti social behaviour. It is fantastic to see local authorities like Camden Council working to improve things for their residents.

The project to redevelop Agar Grove got a go ahead back in 2013. A planning application then got approval in 2014. The project will involve demolition of most low-rise buildings to allow the creation of new builds, communal gardens, play areas, parking, and more. The project vows to deliver enough new council homes to rehome all residents on the estate. There will be new build and refurbished flats for sale too.

Several parts of the project are already complete. The first was 38 new council homes in a Passivhaus block. It was complete in 2018. Residents have been living in the property since then.

The second phase was complete in 2021. There were a further 34 new council homes, as well as two new public squares. A commercial space is now a popular barber shop. Plus, there were 23 homes for sale. The sales generate funds to create more housing, improve roads, and landscaping. All of the properties in this phase are also Passivhaus.

Finally, and the largest to date, the third phase was complete in June 2024. Interestingly, it is a mixed tenure development with 125 homes offering a mix of council housing, intermediate homes, and properties for sale. A commercial space is open as a new shop.

It won the prize in the Large Projects category of the UK Passivhaus Awards in 2021. When it is all said and done, there will be 348 homes (of 496 on the estate) built to their standards.
