One of the biggest projects in the Borough of Merton in London is the current plan to build a new football stadium for AFC Wimbledon at Plough Lane, the spiritual home of the team. The plans have seen some ups and downs, but optimism is high at the moment following the return of the decision to the local council.
The plan originally gained planning permission in December 2015 from Merton Borough Council. In March 2016 the previous Mayor of London Boris Johnson called for a review to see if the project should still go ahead. His replacement and current holder of the office Sadiq Shan handed the decision back in August following a consultation. This is a positive move and could see the project make real progress shortly.
The current plan will see the Greyhound Stadium and all other buildings on the site demolished to make space for the new development. On the land a 20,000 seat stadium (initially 11,000) will be created to become the home of AFC Wimbledon. Alongside this will be facilities for visitors, a retail unit, a squash and fitness club, coach parking, and open spaces.
Possibly the most exciting part of the redevelopment will be the creation of 602 residential units on the site. This will create new homes as well as parking spaces for cars and bicycles.
The whole plan for the area will be fantastic for the community in this part of London. The 602 new homes could prove to be very attractive investment properties when they are finished. They are in a good location and will benefit from a number of local transport links.
