Fast broadband is the top priority for many renters

Recent surveys of the renters and buyers market show that the desire for superfast broadband has become increasingly important to people when looking for new properties. The majority of people used to rank a new kitchen or bathroom highest on their list of preferences, but although these are still important, in the digital age it has become crucial to find property in areas with guaranteed superfast broadband.

Prospective tenants and homebuyers were polled by broadband provider Hyperoptic to assess the importance of high quality internet connections, and the results showed it to be of higher value than good neighbours or even an extra bedroom. Some people are prepared to pay an additional £14,000 or 8% for a property if it offers them a broadband speed of 100 Mbps.

It has become clear that good broadband connection makes a property and area more marketable. People are reliant on their connection for their present and future bandwidth demands. It is also essential for those that work from home and need speedy and consistent internet services. Prospective tenants and buyers are now including the quality of the broadband connection in their checklist, and as our dependency on technology is only set to increase, this is likely to become a standard aspect of property searches.

The survey revealed that speeds of less than 6Mbps are rarely considered and over 30% of people wait until broadband is successfully up and running before they move into their new home. 14Mbps is generally viewed as the bare minimum speed, but people surveyed stated they would rather pay more or hold out for a property that has speeds closer to 100Mbps. Over half of the respondents said that fast broadband was of greater value than gardens and luxurious interior features.
