Enfield’s spookiest house

London has some of the most interesting buildings in the world. There is something for every kind of interest, whether it is heritage architecture, cultural spots, or modern skyscrapers. There are even properties with a history of paranormal activity. As one of the top experts at property investment in Enfield, we want to look at one of the properties here. It has a history of ghostly activity and was the inspiration for a book and The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Chase movie.

The property

Property investment EnfieldFrom the outside 284 Green Street in Brimsdown, Enfield looks like all the other homes on the street. However, it has an infamous history. In the 70s there was a lot of media attention about the property. The resident Peggy Hodgson and her four children reported that a poltergeist was haunting the house. There were claims of banging sounds in the walls, furniture moving, and even two of the children levitating.

The police attended the home in 1977 after calls to report the activity. Police officer Caroline Heeps and a colleague heard the banging and observed a chair moving. There were investigations to check the walls, loft, and pipes, but no causes could be found.

The Society for Psychical Research took interest in the home too. Maurice Grosse and Guy Lyon Playfair, two members of the SPR, visited and also observed noises. The latter wrote a book, claiming it was his belief that there was a poltergeist or other entity haunting the property.

In total over thirty people made reports of hearing noises, including knocking and a gruff voice. They also said they had seen furniture move and some items even being thrown. Two American demonologists, Ed and Lorraine Warren, also shared Playfair’s belief there was a poltergeist. It is their account that was the inspiration for the 2016 horror movie.

Sceptics

However, not everyone was a believer. Other researchers for the SPR had questions about some of the activity. There were even concerns that one of the children, Janet, was staging the haunting.

An American stage magician, Milbourne Christopher, did an investigation and was also a believer that Janet was behind it. He said she was very, very clever and able to stage the noises and movement of furniture.

Ray Alan, a ventriloquist, was also a sceptic. He said the strange gruff voices people had been hearing were vocal tricks Janet could do.

Interestingly there have been no reports of any other paranormal activity at the property for 40 years. It does suggest that the sceptics are likely correct. However, the spooky local legend lives on.
