Bromley is a popular part of London these days because it is very green, has great homes, and offers plenty of amenities. It has some notable parks, green spaces, and local nature reserves. Crystal Palace Park is the most iconic and is in the midst of regeneration. Interestingly, it could soon host new housing developments. We want to have a look at that today, then you can speak to us if you need help with property investment in Bromley.
A wonderful history
Crystal Palace Park is a historical Victorian park. It was originally developed to be the new home of the Crystal Palace, a cast iron and glass structure that was the venue for the Great Exhibition in 1851. The park’s development took place between 1852 and 1855, with a new configuration of the structure opening in 1854.
Initially Crystal Palace Park was popular, offering entertainment, education, and discovery. It had a number of popular attractions, including the dinosaur park. Sadly, it fell into disrepair over time, particularly after the fire that destroyed the palace itself in 1936.
Over the years there have been many attempts to regenerate the park, with differing levels of success. The London Borough of Bromley has been working on it since the late 80s. Things have been more successful recently, including an Improvement Scheme in 2019.
New proposals
One of the latest proposals for Crystal Palace Park is to develop two sites to create housing. It could become a landmark example of property investment in Bromley because of the area.
The housing proposals are from Bromley Council. They have identified two sites; Rockhills and Sydenham Villas, both on Thicket Road. The local authority has issued a notice of appropriation of the land, so they are serious about the redevelopment.
Interestingly, the London Borough of Bromley was planning to market the two sites in May 2024. There was outline planning permission for 210 residential units. Therefore, it now looks like they will be proceeding with the plans to create housing.
If the development does go ahead, the new homes could be incredibly popular. Residents would have plenty of greenery and a number of amenities on their doorstep. Crucially, the sites are close to Gipsy Hill train station. So, it would allow an easy commute to London Victoria and London Bridge.
It will be interesting to see what happens next. The proposal is currently open to feedback until 18th Feb. The Council will have to consider any representations, including objections to the plans.
