The London Borough of Culture scheme has been fantastic for different parts of the city since its inception in 2017. It provides funding so the boroughs that win bids can host a full year of events. Previous winners

The first London Borough of Culture was Waltham Forest in 2019. The area got funding and had an amazing year. The estimate is 500,000 visitors took part in the events. There was a lasting legacy too, with Fellowship Square now a cultural hub for the area.

Brent took over from Waltham Forest in 2020. It was a tough year because of covid. However, the programme was able to adapt and still bring people together. In fact, it inspired more creativity and innovation. Notably, a series of podcasts had a global audience of over 13 million people.

The next holder of the title was Lewisham in 2022. Impressive here is the number of events that celebrated the history of activism in the area. Young people also had the chance to showcase their talent. The impact was amazing, including seeing the reopening of Broadway Theatre and new partnerships.

Croydon was the most recent winner, gaining the London Borough of Culture title in 2023 and kicking off their events in April. The wonderful programme showcases the identity and heritage of the area, particularly in music and art. It also combines home-grown talent and grassroots activities with international headliners.

Next holders

As you may have guessed from our comment about property investment in Haringey, the North London borough will be a future holder of the title. They will have to wait until 2027 though.

Before Haringey’s turn, Wandsworth will get the title in April 2025. Their bid, involving work from community organisations, schools, businesses, local residents, and more, was impressive. Now they can plan their programme of events, celebrating the diverse art and cultural scene. There are some big names here, including the Royal Academy of Dance and Battersea Arts Centre.

Haringey will be celebrating the rich history as a “rebel borough”. Their programme will look at the radical heritage of the area as well as the cultural diversity today. It will involve some big venues, including Alexandra Palace and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Haringey’s plan is to celebrate culture in all 21 wards in the borough. Their programme will involve hundreds of local artists. The estimate is over 300,000 will participate in the events. Crucially, the hope is the whole thing will support the flourishing art and cultural scene in the area.
