Richmond is full of wonderful places to live but the villages of Ham and Petersham have something extra special. Both are located in a curve of the Thames with Richmond to the north, Richmond Park to the east, Kingston to the South, and Twickenham across the river to the west.
The big selling points of both villages are the amount of space and greenery. Neither saw the kind of development triggered by the arrival of the railway because they never had a station. As a result they remained prime agricultural land for much longer. This had an impact on the homes in the area. Instead of rows of Victorian terraces there are more spacious Georgian properties and homes from the 50s and 60s.
People who love the outdoors are drawn to living in Ham and Petersham. There are plenty of walks along the Thames path as well as through the local parks. In addition there are a wide array of sporting facilities including cricket and tennis. The Ham Polo Club is the last remaining one in Greater London.
The country feel and space make the towns very popular with families. In addition they are attracted to the local schools. The primaries in Ham are good and there are two more in Richmond. Kingston has two grammar schools and the local comprehensive is highly rated. The German School London comprehensive is located in Petersham. It attracts many German families to the area. Richmond and Kingston also have private schools.
A downside of the areas is both don’t have train stations; instead residents need to travel to nearby Richmond. They can pick up the District Line here, take the Overground, or jump on the main line trains. It is a trade off that many people are happy to make to enjoy the beautiful settings in Ham and Petersham.
