Over the last decade or so, Battersea has been completely transformed from a run-down area of Wandsworth into one of the most exciting and contemporary areas of the capital. The redevelopment of Battersea Power Station has been a key to this, bringing one of London’s most iconic structures bang up to date for the needs of a modern, fast-paced city.
Since being shut down in the early 1980s, the power station was largely left to fall into disrepair doe many years. For this reason, there was an enthusiastic response to the plans to regenerate the property and create much-needed new homes. Many of the proposed apartments have been sold years before the expected completion date, illustrating how high the demand is. The area is particularly popular with professionals thanks to the fashionable businesses in the area, the transport links to the rest of the city and the many luxurious homes available to rent or purchase.
One of the other major developments to take place here was the £11.4 million makeover of Battersea Park, which is now a stunning green area home to many thousands of plants. There are also many plans to improve transport links, with two planned new London Underground stations and an extension to the Northern Line to be completed by 2020.
Work is ongoing to help the area improve even further, so it seems certain that Battersea will continue to evolve over the next few years.
