A revision for housing plans in East Finchley
New housing plans have been agreed for Barnet, even though there are some who have concerns. A proposal to construct affordable housing on an estate in East Finchley has gotten approval. This came following a U-turn on propositions to build on green spaces.
Barnet Homes now has permission to create 16 affordable houses. The company is Barnet Council’s housing arm. These units will be between existing blocks at Grange Estate. Subsequently, these plans got scaled back to offer 16 houses for London affordable rent. Eight of the units here are going to be in a three-storey block. It will be on a car park between Craven House and Willow House in Central Avenue. As for the other eight, they are going to be in a four-storey block. It will be built between East View House and Hilton House next to the high road.

The concerns locals still have
Inhabitants still have issues with the new plans relating to parking and traffic. The two schemes put forward to the council’s strategic planning committee gained 79 objections in total.
A representative of the Elmfield Road Residents’ Association went to the councillors. They recommend it is a good idea to make new access routes available. Locals were not against the affordable housing. However, they had worries about having more congestion in the single-lane road. The situation is already bad, leading to road rage incidents during rush hour. The increase in residents could make it worse if there aren’t improvements to access.
One resident said that individuals living on the estate were happy for more affordable housing. But, they want it to be within the context of how they make their way out and into the space. It needs to be in the context of how they circulate and enter their properties too. Otherwise, all this would become a pointless exercise.
A planning consultant representing Barnet Homes, Alex Kitts, also had comments on the project. According to him, surveys show that the capacity exists for more parking. Additionally, the developments were not going to place any extra stress on the highway network.
He continued by stating that deferrals would lead to a loss of £1.6m in grant funding. This is considering the timeframes. Said funding is from the Greater London Authority. Thus, the decision is essential to providing these houses in Barnet to meet desperate levels of demand.
