Beckton is one of the most eastern urban neighbourhoods in the London Borough of Newham. It was initially a stretch of marshland but the rapid expansion of the capital brought transformation. A lot of industrial activity arrived in the area, including what was once the largest gasworks in Europe.
After World War II a large number of pre-fabricated homes were built in the area to re-house people. Many of them only lasted until the 80s before being redeveloped. Now there are a number of housing developments across the area.
The industrial activity in the area has diminished over the years too. Most notable, the gasworks closed in 1969. This left large pieces of Brownfield land. These sites are now prime for redevelopment and the creation of new homes, offices, shops, and warehouses.
Recently it was revealed that a large piece of Brownfield land in Beckton would be transformed into SEGRO Park Newham. The land will be reactivated, creating new jobs and boosting the economy in the area.
Two companies have already signed up to take new properties on the site. DPD, one of the largest parcel delivery companies in the UK, will take up a new 45,200 square foot facility on a 25 year lease. The new urban logistics depot will create 104 jobs.
The second big company to arrive in the area is Travelodge. They will take on a new hotel with 113 rooms. Again it will have a 25 year lease. This will create 26 new jobs.
The development of SEGRO Park Newham could be wonderful for the area. It is based in a strategic location close to main transport infrastructure like the M25.
