Islington Prison Site Scheme
Peabody, a housing association, has purchased the Holloway Prison site. There is a plan to build 1,000 new homes and 60% of these will be affordable. This is good news for the local residents, the council, and Sadiq Khan, who were wishing for at least 50% of the homes on the land to be affordable.
The Mayor of London had an important role in the deal through a £42m loan to Peabody. This helped them to buy the land and was also the reason for the increase in the amount of affordable housing from 50% to 60%. The move will prevent the common occurrence of people buying land and developing it without a thought for social or affordable housing.
In the past, the Islington site was the home of a women’s prison. There has been notable interest in the land across the last few years and feminist campaigners occupied it in 2017.
The aim is for the housing association to begin building by the year 2022. They also want to have the first of the affordable homes ready in 2026. Community groups and local residents will have a say in the development of the plans.
Lots of tenancies
Peabody bought the plot from the Ministry of Justice. Their plan is to partner with the developer London Square and build the homes. An impressive 70% of the affordable housing will be for social rent. The remaining ones will be London Living Rent as well as shared ownership.
The development will include providing a women’s centre and local shops on Camden Road and Pankhurst Road. This historic site will be the location of a fantastic housing scheme. The developers will also keep social infrastructure and placemaking in mind in all decisions.
