The London Borough of Wandsworth is most well known for its location and as the home of Battersea Power Station. Surprisingly more recently it has become a hot spot for attractive architecture. This year five properties from the area were shortlisted as finalists in the Housing Design Awards (HDA). These promote excellence in terms of design and sustainability.
The properties are located in Wandsworth town centre, Putney, Battersea, Clapham Junction, and Roehampton. Each of them is noteworthy and deserves its place on the shortlist for a national award.
One of the most outstanding projects is Mapleton Crescent by Pocket Living. When finished, the residential tower will become the tallest modular building of its type in Europe. The flats are assembled in factories before being transported to the site ready for installation. In total there will be 89 new homes, 53 aimed at first-time buyers with lower total incomes.
Chadwick Hall is a brand new student halls on the site of the University of Roehampton. It is situated on the grounds of the Grade II listed Downshire House, an 18th century Georgian villa. The building has eye-catching architecture and a series of rooms to suit different student needs.
The other projects shortlisted include the redevelopment of St John’s Hill Estate, a London Square development, and the flats created on the site of a former petrol station on York Road in Battersea.
