Transport for London recently announced what they are referring to as a “historic re-imagining” of the Overground lines. Previously they were all orange and didn’t have unique names. However, each will now have their own specific name and colour. It will make them more like the Tube Lines. The changes
Each of the lines has a new name that is synonymous with the route. They are:
Lioness Line – the route from Euston to Watford passes Wembley Stadium. It will now have the name of England Women’s football team, celebrating the incredible success they have had in the last few years including the Euro 2022 win. It will be yellow parallel lines.
Mildmay Line – this route goes from Stratford to Richmond and Clapham Junction. Its name comes from a charitable hospital in Shoreditch that specialises in health and social care for people with HIV. It will be blue parallel lines.
Windrush Line – the third route is between Highbury & Islington and Clapham Junction. This name has been chosen because many of the areas along the line have strong Caribbean ties. It celebrates the generation of people who came to the UK post WWII. It will be red parallel lines.
Suffragette Line – the next route connects Gospel Oak and Barking Riverside. The new name pays homage to the women who campaigned for women’s right to vote. Notable here is the East London Federation of Suffragettes from the East End as well as key figure Annie Huggett. It will be green parallel lines.
Liberty Line – this route is from Romford to Upminster. The name celebrates a number of things, including the motto of Havering as well as its status as a royal liberty. It will be grey parallel lines.
Weaver Line – the final line is from Liverpool Street and branches out to Enfield Town, Chingford, and Cheshunt. The new name was chosen to celebrate the heritage of areas like Spitalfields, Bethnal Green and Hackney. They were all important spots for textiles at various points. Why are things changing?
TfL has chosen to change the Overground Lines to celebrate the unique history of the locations. They refer to many of the things that make London such a special city.
The hope is it will also make it easier for people to navigate when they need to travel by train. It will give each line a unique identity in response to the massive number of passengers that use trains today. So, it will make it easier to see where to make changes and identify when there are service updates.
The individual lines will have their new colours on maps, diagrams, apps, and other tools. The orange roundel will still be used as well though.
TfL is already working on the rebranding process. The plan is for a full roll out to be complete by the end of the year so people have plenty of time to learn the new colours and names.
