Merton has an incredible sporting history. That is why it is working hard to establish itself as London’s Borough of Sport. The goal here is also to encourage more people to be active, regardless of their age. As one of the top providers of estate management in Merton, we want to have a closer look at the heritage and what the council is doing to get more people into sport.
Legacy
The most noteworthy thing about sport in Merton is that it is home to Wimbledon, the oldest tennis tournament in the world. It has been taking place in the borough since 1877. Today it is one of the most prestigious dates on the tennis calendar and one of the four Grand Slam tournaments.
Merton also has a great legacy in football. The original Wimbledon F.C had matches in the area for over 100 years. The history of the team is impressive, including the 1988 FA Cup win over Liverpool. Sadly, the original team moved to Milton Keynes in 2003 and became MK Dons. However, a new team (AFC Wimbledon) was founded in 2002. They have played in the area since then.
It doesn’t stop there either. The area also has an interesting history in cricket. For one thing, it has the oldest continuously used pitch in the world. You can find it at Mitcham Cricket Green. It’s been hosting matches since 1685.
Getting people active
The local council is currently in the process of encouraging all residents to be active at least once per week. To achieve this, they are investing in the infrastructure, working to obtain more funding for facilities, and building partnerships with local sporting organisations and clubs.
There have been a number of fantastic improvements, including spending almost £1m to refurbish 47 tennis courts in the borough. In addition, 23 schools have had approximately £300,000 in funding to provide more sporting activities. Plus, the council has made swimming sessions free at leisure centres for anyone under 16.
Merton Council also held a huge event last weekend with over 30 local sport and community clubs. The Big Sports Day had activities for all ages. They were incredibly diverse, with everything from BMX to walking tennis. The goal was to show there were sporting activities for everyone, whatever their interest or ability level.
