HS2

Train trackOne of the biggest transport projects at the moment is HS2. It is a flagship project to connect London with parts of Central and Northern England with a new high speed line. In addition, there will be upgrades on other parts of the rail system. Ultimately the goal is to improve services and reduce the travel time.

A number of things make this such a noteworthy project. For starters it is the biggest ever investment in the railway network in North England. In fact, it will be the largest project outside of London since the Victorian Era. It is also the largest infrastructure project in Europe.

In total HS2 will cost £74billion to complete. This will include over 250 miles of new high speed rail line. There will also be the creation of new tunnels for the route and new or upgraded stations.

There are a number of benefits with the project. One is that it will help the UK in its pursuit of becoming net zero carbon. The new infrastructure will reduce the amount of cars and freight vehicles on roads because the rail service will be faster. Plus it can cut down on domestic flights too.

The work could have a big impact on areas all over London. As one of the top names for property management Camden has, we are ready to provide services to any clients that need it.

What is happening with HS2?

Plans for HS2 date back to 2009 and an assessment of whether there was a case for a new route. In 2010 there was public consultation about the route from London to Birmingham and then branching paths to Leeds and Manchester.

The announcement that the project would go ahead was made in 2012. A bill to authorise construction of Phase 1 got approval and royal assent in February 2017. A second bill for phase 2a was written in July of the same year. It got royal assent in 2021.

Work on the first phase of the project (London to Birmingham) began in 2020 following a number of delays. There have since been a number of changes, including cancellation of the branch to Leeds. Other parts of the project may also be altered in the future.

Property management CamdenThe most recent development is that tunnelling work in London has begun. The first tunnel boring machines began working on one of the 5 mile long tunnels (Sushila) between West Ruislip and Greenford in the first week of September. Work on the second tunnel (Caroline) will begin later this month.

Work is also underway at the moment in Camden. In fact, the Borough will see some of the biggest changes because of the project. The plan is for the southern terminus to be at Euston. A huge redevelopment will allow this, creating a “mega” station in the area with 24 platforms. Several pieces of demolition work have already taken place as part of it, including getting rid of former carriage sheds and removal of the western ramp and canopy.
