A legendary benefactor
The neighbourhood bears the name of one of the greatest benefactors of Chelsea and London. Sir Hans Sloane was a renowned physician and naturalist. He moved to the area in 1742. One of his biggest contributions was establishing Chelsea Physic Garden. It is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the UK, and at one point also had the richest stock in the world.
The only thing that exceeds the botanical contribution is the role Sloane played in the creation of the Natural History Museum. Over his lifetime he built a huge personal collection of flora, fauna, books, and more. By 1741 it was a unique treasure. Upon his death he bequeathed the collection to the nation, stating he wanted it to be seen by anyone who wanted to. As a result, it became the foundation of the Natural History Museum.
Hans Town
While the area bears the name of Sloane, it is the work of architect Henry Holland that had one of the biggest impacts on it. He was behind the creation of much of the iconic architecture in the area, including Georgian terraces on Sloane Street, Hans Place, and Sloane Square. Most of these were complete by the end of the 18th century.
From the 1870s though, a swathe of architects came in to redevelop lots of the properties. The originals had been on 99 year leases so it was time to replace them. One of the biggest changes was the transformation of Sloane Square into Cadogan Square. Because so many different architects were involved, the new properties all have unique detailing.
There were further changes in the 20th century, but they had less of an impact. A few noteworthy developments have taken place though. One of them is the Danish Embassy. It is a stunning modernist building by Arne Jacobsen.
Today
The area is one of the most iconic and exclusive parts of London today. This is why it has such a big average price tag. Demand tends to be high and consistent because of the rarity and prestige of the homes.
