Repurposing a ‘gap site’ into new homes
Sheppard Robson has won planning permission for their designs for a £75million mixed-used housing development. The scheme in north-east London will be on the site of a former department store. Haringey Council gave the practice planning consent for the 197-home Wood Green redevelopment.
This work would replace the department store with residential units that will be a mixture of 1 to 4 bedroom homes. The project will also include restaurants, a Premier Inn hotel, and shops. In total 40% of the flats are set to be affordable. These will be split as 36% for London Living Rent and 64% for social rent.
The plan is for the buildings to skirt a new public courtyard so this development connects with the surrounding area. This work will repurpose this gap site to meet the needs of the community.
Like so many areas in London, Haringey needs more housing of a decent quality. The Wood Green scheme is an example of work that will provide residents with this. At the same time, it will have a positive impact on the appearance of the area. The proposals set out by Sheppard Robson will protect heritage assets in the area along with key local views. Their plans will breathe new life into this high street and also help with the regeneration of the wider area.
